Laura & Todd – their wedding day – Westmount Country Club, NJ

Laura and Todd’s wedding was like a family reunion for me in a way. They are the 5th couple in a wider family group whose wedding I photographed, and on this day I met up with previous couples and parents and other family and friends. So many face I recognized and knew. With their photo session in New York, I also knew that photographing their wedding would be an exciting fun day anyway … so with all that, I was really looking forward to this. And it all adds up to a set of photographs that I am quite proud of.  Enjoy!

Laura and Todd, thank for being so great to work with!

Amazing light in the church! Did you use flash anyways? The 2nd and 3rd images from the church doesn’t look like flash was used at all.

    Great job!

Humberto … no flash in the church, except for the processional (which isn’t shown here).

    Thank you for the compliments!

Hello thanks for this site am learning how to best use my d700. But I now realize exposing for blacks are much more difficult than whites. Secondly do you use light defuser on your flash?

Samuel .. the best is to base your exposure metering for the bride’s dress. You can’t simultaneously expose for the blacks. But you can control the contrast with your lighting. It is also essential to shoot in the RAW format so you can control your contrast and black point afterwards.

For the photos outside, I mostly used an off-camera speedlight and white shoot-through umbrella. The photos of the reception were done with one on-camera speedlight, using the Spinlight 360.

    Hello Neil,

This was one of the most beautifully-lit projects I’ve yet seen, so bravo! Did you use the SpinLight for this? It’s incredibly subtle and perfect.
