Alli & Scott – their wedding day – Temple Israel of Lawrence, NY

With Alli and Scott’s engagement photo session, I already knew I was in for a treat – a photogenic couple with tons of personality, I knew they’d be a joy to photograph on their wedding day. The entire day took place at the impressive Temple Israel in Lawrence (Long Island). Since it is winter, we had to mostly work indoors, and the location lent itself to dramatic portraits of the bride and groom. The best way I can sum up the day is that it is this kind of wedding and couple that makes it extra rewarding to be a wedding photographer.

Scott and Alli, thank you and congratulations!

One of my favorite weddings on your blog, Neil. I especially like the second image. Intimacy and love all over… Your party pictures are outstanding. So many ‘perfect moments’.

Say how did you light the group shot?

Mirko .. thank you for the compliments!

The lighting for that group shot in the street, was a single softbox with a speedlight. It was held aloft by my 2nd photographer.

    Hi Neil,
Love these too. You seem to have the perfect lighting and perfect exposure on each shot. Have to ask… on the whole what are you using for your lighting on all of these shots. Speedlight and softbox or something more? I am looking at investing in more gear as I have a wedding coming up next summer. Not sure if I need to invest in another speedlight (I only have 1 now-SB900) or in actual strobes. Suggestions?

Looking at these series I could get only one thought in my mind:”…this mister van Niekerk is undoubtedly a genius!”
I have been following your work for about two years now, Neil and every time you manage to impress me with your works of art.
How can I become your personal friend????

    🙂

Lynn .. for the bride and groom’s portraits at this wedding, I used a Lowel ID-light (a video light).
    Details in this article.

For the family photographs, (not shown here), I used two speedlights and a white shoot-through umbrella.

For everything else, I used on-camera bounce flash.

The light in all of these is spot on, Neil. But those first few couple’s portraits are especially nice. Well done, again.
