Ashley & Michael – photo session

Ashley & Michael – engagement photo session

Ashley and Michael met up with me at the Fairleigh Dickinson campus (NJ). The place had relevance for them since this is where they met as students. So we wandered around looking for scenic spots, with the late afternoon sun adding just that extra touch of romance. Ashley and Michael, thank you, I know we’re going to have as much fun on your wedding day!

Matthew, the backlight isn’t the sun (at least not entirely). The centric shadow dispersion of the trees suggest a supplementary lightsource perhaps a monolight or speedlight (the stand legs peeking out from behind the tree to their right betray its presence). I would suspect that the same concept was applied in picture 2 and 3 , For the rest I can’t really tell. Clever use of kicker/rim lighting though.

Just to clarify … the top image was shot with off-camera flash as the back-light, as described in the linked article.

The other images were shot with the sun for back-lighting, some with just the available light, and some with off-camera flash lighting the couple, whether as main light or as fill-light.
