Finding the Light

A second article that I wrote for Rangefinder - the official magazine of WPPI - appeared in their September ‘06 issue. And of course I am really proud of this. For me it’s quite an honour to appear alongside the best in the industry, in one of the premier photography trade publications. (The previous article appeared in their April ‘06 issue.)

This article first appeared on my PlanetNeil website under the same title - Finding the Light. The topic is on using lighting where the conditions aren’t ideal.  Even though the tone of the article is tongue-in-the-cheek, it will  hopefully be informative, and maybe even inspire other photographers looking for ideas on using photographic lighting.

Here is what the opening page looked like.

    Hello,
I noticed your 3 umbrellas in the corners of the room.
pictured in this month’s Rangefinder, were pointed to the walls of each corner on a downward angle.

Was this their placement during your actual shoot?

    Thank you, Nicholas

    Hi there Nicholas ..

Thank you for your kind words in the other posting as well.

As for the umbrellas, they are thin umbrellas which can either be used as shoot-through umbrellas, or as reflective umbrellas (which will lose some of the strobe’s light by letting it pass through.

So the intention there was to just flood with place with light from the high-mounted strobes. Some of the light will go through the umbrella - and some of the light will be reflected and bounce from the wall. There was no real science to it - just the intention to flood the venue with light from the various strobes.

    Neil.
